March 14th 1544 - Pope Paul III Abolishes the Limitation of the Number of Members
Cardinal Bartolomea Guidiccioni (1469-1549), exponent of the conservative reform party, had insisted on limiting the number of the full members of the Society of Jesus to sixty. Only so the Bull 'Regimini Militantis Ecclesiae' could be issued. Pope Paul III abolished that limitation on March 14th 1544.
When Ignatius died in 1556 the Order numbered about thousand members. The number of the provinces amounted to twelve and the number of the houses to seventy-two. When Father General Laínez, the successor of Ignatius, died in the year 1665 the Order numbered one hundred thirty houses in eighteen provinces. The number of the members amounted to about 3.500.
